Boss Malaprops

Our former department head was famous for his malaprops.

Here are his greatest hits:

• The Greek pyramids weren’t built in a day.
• Spurt me out an e-mail.
• Let’s not put the horse before the cart.
• Tonight we’re eating at the Tibetian restaurant.
• It’s not rocket surgery.
• It’s all smoke and windows.
• Nothing is nailed in stone.
• Sometimes you have to roll the dice, and it comes up tails.

Lousy Bosses Are Lousy Role Models

Suffering under a lousy boss?

We were pointed to a recent article which delivered some interesting findings about employee experiences relating to their bosses:

  • Only 30% believe that their direct boss gives them effective performance coaching. (Our math says 70% don't)
  • 43% believe their direct boss provides regular praise for effort as well as accomplishment. (What's your math say?)
  • 61% believe their direct boss is honest in his/her dealings with them. (Our math says 39% don't.)
  • There are more lousy bosses running teams and businesses today than there are best bosses.
So we're tired of these kind of numbers, and why aren't things getting better for employees at work?  Why don't employees have the bosses that they deserve?

We don't have the only solution, but we do have one solution that could make a difference.  People can now rate their boss and say what they think in a safe and anonymous way.

We've all had a bad boss that somehow stayed behind to keep on being a bad boss long after we left.  How can that be?

Rate people rate.  You'll feel better and you have the opportunity to give your lousy boss a reality check about how lousy they really are.

And We're Off!

It feels like my birthday today. I’m so excited, I could pop. Now I know what it must feel like when a small business owner or a restauranteur opens their doors to customers for the very first time. My partner’s and my new business has virtually opened its doors today!

I wanted to personally let you know.  I would sincerely appeciate you checking it out and telling your friends and blog posting about it.  We are launching on less than a shoestring here and ever little bit of mention will help.

The site will explain it all. Give it a shot. Kick the tires. Rate a boss! (That is the point.) Let us know what you think via the “Contact Us” links.

Stress On The Job Can Be Deadly

In a 2013 Harris Interactive workplace study, 83 percent of Americans polled said they are stressed at work — up more than 10 percent from last year.
The study cites poor compensation, unreasonable workload, frustration with co-workers, not working in the career area of choice, poor work-life balance, lack of career opportunities and fear of being laid off or fired as top work stressors.
All of this stress is having an impact on more than just engagement levels. According to a 2012 University College study, occupational stress can increase the risk of heart attacks, early aging and a host of other medical issues.
eBossRate.com was designed as a means for workers to blow off a little steam when needed.  Bad bosses certainly contribute to stress on the job.
Rate away and tell your boss what you think!

Plan To Use eBossRate.com on Boss's Day This Year

This is a niece that's on our side for sure. What a great idea!

I've been thinking about ebossrate's debut. My office has a unanimously beloved owner of the company who is in many ways all of our boss. Since it will be boss' day I'm going to buy one of your packages and give everyone in the office a chance to say something cool about her, and then I'll pay for her to read it too. I bet once people in the office use it they'll have other things they want to write about former bosses.

Our "official" and "hard" launch will be on Boss's Day of this year, Wednesday, October 13.

Here Is A Rate at eBossRate.com Waiting To Happen

It was a typical hectic Friday afternoon at our law office.  My boss, meanwhile was hundreds of miles away at a luxury resort preparing for a meeting.  In the midst of my insane day, I got an urgent call from him.

"You have to phone the hotel right away.  It's important," my boss said.  "Ask them to send someone to the pool area immediately."

"What's wrong?" I asked.

"We haven't seen a waiter in 20 minutes and we need our drinks refreshed."

Restaurant Owner Fires Employees By...

text message.

Another clueless boss.

eBossRate Questions

Jerk or not?  You be the rater and let them know.  Always safe and anonymously.

Our site will eventually have hundreds and hundreds of questions that raters can respond to that will get to the crux of what behaviors identify a good or a bad boss.  We have searched high and low for these questions / statements and we think that our raters will enjoy responding to them.

If a rater chooses to offer their boss the option of seeing their anonymous ratings then we think the questions and how the employee responded can offer some insight to the boss so they may continue doing the positive things and stop doing things that make them famous being a jerk of a boss.

We're going to provide some potential statements that may appear on our site:

My boss sees themselves as part of a team.

My boss thinks their job is to whip a team into shape.

My boss does not put off having talks with employees about performance or behavior problems.

My boss dumps on people instead of properly delegating work.

My boss puts themselves above the team.

My boss understands the importance of fairness to all team members.

Raters will be asked to check a number between 5 and 1 that indicates agreement or not:

Our rating systems will be simple, intuitive, and provide a safe and anonymous way for an employee to rate their boss.

Thanks very much to Wally Bock at his Three-Star Leadership Blog for the post Don't Be A Jerk.

Guess who Wally was talking about?

Use eBossRate.com To Tell Your Boss Thanks

Top 10 Traits Of An Exceptional Boss

They lose us on this "Live for their jobs" bullshit.  What does "so to speak" mean?

eBossRate.com is also for people with great bosses.  It's a cool way to let them know you appreciate them.

Gallup released its annual “State of the American Workplace” study on engagement Tuesday, reporting that a whopping 70 percent of American workers are “not engaged” or “actively disengaged” with their work. That leaves just 30 percent of the American workforce claiming to be genuinely excited when they wake up for work every morning.

If You Get Evaluated, Why Don't You Get to Evaluate?

Now you do.

The dreaded evaluation.  The boss sits down and, if well trained and fair, will provide an employee with feedback about their strengths and weaknesses.

But that is far from reality for many employees.  Many bosses have never learned how to properly evaluate their employees so they flub the process from beginning to end.  The employee often walks away from the meeting feeling small and defeated.  A root canal would have been preferred to an evaluation from the boss.

That's if the boss evaluates at all.

eBossRate.com will allow employees to provide fair and balanced performance ratings to their boss.  The boss will have the option of reviewing the feedback should they want to and the rater agrees to allow them to.

Remember, the raters themselves will never, ever, never be identified to the boss or the company they work for.

Welcome to the Blog

The Birth of eBossRate.com

The Flash of Brilliance email delivered September 8, 2011

It went something like this 22 months ago:

Future Partner (the smart one) asks his Future Partner (the simple one) via email:

Is this out there? We set up a website with a tool that any employee can use anonymously to evaluate leadership at his/her company.  We build a tool and employees pay a nominal fee to have a say in the matter.  Bosses evaluate you, and does so year after year, but no one really evaluates them, now it's your turn. we score and post the results.  We don't post anything slanderous, just company name, scores and "constructive" feedback.

The Future Partner (the simple one) immediately, without hesitation, answers the Future Partner (the smart one) back:

You, my friend, may have completely hit the jackpot.  It is freaking brilliant. We can do this.  You think I'm the man?  No.  You are the man.  Let's talk tomorrow.  (It was 11:28 p.m.)  I say again, brilliant. We just have to make it tight and right and we can.  I will carry your bags on this.  You are CEO/President.  I can be VP of Marketing if you'll have me.  I know a pretty good web guy.  Have to track him down.

So here we are 22 month later on the verge of launching a site that meets, and then some, the original vision of our CEO, the smart one.

Accessible

eBossrate.com will be accessible from your desktop, laptop, tablet, iPhone or Android.

We are web and mobile web capable. Apps will be coming as soon as possible. When envisioning eBossRate.com, we saw friends passing around their phones to each other rating their bosses after those particularly tough days. And the good days too!
